Food Waste Friday – 7.29.11

Food Waste Friday keeps me responsible & accountable for my family’s food & finances…thanks to The Frugal Girl!

Oh dear.  Apparently, I have either stopped paying attention to my food waste or stopped caring about my public food waste confessions.  This week I held 2 elimination rounds in my kitchen.

Round 1:  green onions, applesauce, and crab & artichoke dip.  Weak justification to make myself feel better:  the dip went bad because I ran out of stuff to dip in it.

Round 2:  a peach, green  leaf lettuce, and a jalapeno.  A jalapeno!  This may have some seriously negative implications in my marriage.

Though I certainly don’t deserve to imply that I’m a food waste champion this week, I do have a success story.  We had some bacon while we were camping last weekend, and had a few strips left over.  Friends, this was not bacon.  This was bacon.  Pork, full-fat, thick-cut, and peppered.  We don’t mess around when we’re eating in the great outdoors.  Anyway, between the bacon, some sour cream that needed using up, and leftover cheese, we had some pretty delicious baked potatoes.

Now, somebody please help me to feel ashamed enough so I don’t repeat this next week.  Thanks.

  1. Shame on you!

Kidding. 🙂 Weeks like this happen, but the important thing is that you still cleaned out your fridge and blogged about it. On weeks like this, I’ve avoided blogging and then felt guilty about it. So you really are doing a good job, even if it doesn’t feel like it.

  2. What Elizabeth said, for sure. And you gave me a great idea for using up the sour cream in my fridge. I know what my mid afternoon snack is going to be…

  3. The honesty thing is for sure what’s important I have found being honest with myself is my surest way to improve in an area. By the way, peppers and sour cream both freeze wonderfully-I do not consider food a waste if it can be frozen. I would also try cutting up the peach and throwing in the freezer too-use to top ice cream or yogurt.
I just came across your blog this am and am really enjoying it…keep on keeping on. Ann
